Hurricane & Wind Missile Test: SIPs vs Sticks

Today, we’re comparing SIP construction and traditional 2x6 construction with drywall and OSB to see how they each hold up under impact.

Let’s fire some missiles!

First, we aim at the traditional drywall and OSB wall. Three, two, one—fire!

The result is dramatic. The missile blows straight through. Without any insulation to slow it down, it’s a complete failure—the missile went clean through the wall.

Next, we test the SIP wall, which has a foam core. This time, I get to do the honors.

We fire the missile at the SIP wall, and it bounces right back at us.

Checking the impact: even though the OSB surface cracked, the foam core stopped the missile completely. There’s no penetration through the back side at all.

And just to be clear—it was the same speed both times: 34 miles an hour.

That’s impressive. The foam inside the SIP was strong enough to absorb the impact and prevent a full breach, showing just how tough and resilient SIP construction really is.
