Welcome to our video demonstrating the proper application of SIP Tape when working with Premier SIPs.
This video focuses on the correct application of SIP Tape as part of overall SIP construction, with special attention to cooler, northern climate zones. Following the Premier SIPs Resource Manual is essential to ensure a long-lasting, durable SIP structure.
Surface Preparation and Application
Before applying SIP Tape, all surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, grease, oil, or any contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
When applying the tape, peel back the release paper as you go. A soft rubber roller is required to firmly press the SIP Tape onto the textured SIP surface, ensuring proper adhesion.
Applying SIP Tape at Key Areas
Ridge Beams:
SIP Tape is installed on the ridge beam before SIP roof installation. Place the tape over the ridge beam without removing the release paper. The release paper should face away from the beam and the tape should be tacked down.
Once the roof panels are installed and properly weather-protected, you can remove the release paper and press the tape upward onto the roof SIP using a soft roller.
Roof-to-Wall Connections:
If the roof and wall panels are not flush, use 12-inch wide SIP Tape, overlapping both the wall and roof panels by at least two inches.
If the roof and wall panels are flush, use 4-inch wide SIP Tape.
In both cases, a roller is required to firmly press the tape onto the surfaces.
Roof Splines:
Use 4-inch wide SIP Tape to cover all roof spline connections. Again, use a roller for proper adhesion.
Wall Corners:
Apply 4-inch wide SIP Tape carefully over corner connections and press firmly with a roller.
Wall Splines:
Use 4-inch wide SIP Tape over all wall spline joints, pressing firmly with a roller.
Completed SIP Tape Installation
When applied correctly—covering spline connections, wall-to-roof joints, ridge beams, corners, and wall splines—the use of SIP Tape results in a virtually airtight SIP envelope.
SIP Tape Application in Warm, Humid Climates
In warm and humid climates, SIP Tape installation follows a similar method but is performed on the exterior of the building rather than the interior. The Resource Manual provides detailed guidance for these conditions.
Exterior SIP Tape should be applied at:
Ridge beams
All roof splines
Roof-to-wall intersections
Wall corners
Wall splines
The decision to use interior or exterior SIP Tape application should be made by the building designer, based on local climate and code requirements.
SIP Tape and SIP Sealant Together
The SIP Tape discussed here is specifically provided by Premier SIPs suppliers. General-purpose building tapes are not appropriate for use with Premier SIPs.
For the best performance, SIP Tape should always be used in combination with Premier SIP Sealant to create a truly airtight installation. (A separate video covers SIP Sealant application.)
