The strength of Premier SIPS doesn’t come by accident. Their design draws inspiration from the engineering principles of the steel I-beam, allowing each SIP panel to handle weight and impact with impressive stability. Each panel consists of two layers of structural grade oriented strand board (OSB) structurally bonded to a solid core of expanded polystyrene (EPS or GPS) insulation, forming a unified, load-bearing panel. Notably, the insulation core has compressive strength properties so strong it is also used as GeoFoam below parking structures, on ramps and freeways. A SIP assembly functions like an I-beam, with the OSB acting as flanges that resist bending while the solid EPS core absorbs shear forces. The result? An incredibly durable panel that distributes impact evenly and withstands compressive loads with ease.
SIPs also handle twice the in-plane compressive loads of traditional stick framing, a testament to their robust engineering. Unlike conventional wood framing, which can sag or shift over time, Premier SIPS maintain their shape and strength, providing the right amount of stiffness and flexibility to endure high pressures. Premier SIPS owes much of its strength to a specialized manufacturing process that ensures durability and impact resistance. Each SIP undergoes an automated laminating process, where adhesive is applied, materials are aligned, and the panel is pressed to perfection. The structural adhesive is the same type of adhesive used in the glulam beam manufacturing process. This precision process results in a continuous bond between the OSB and EPS insulation, creating a unified system that’s more than the sum of its parts.
At the end of the day a factory manufactured precision SIP system delivers a high strength-to-weight ratio, resulting in a lighter overall structure, which is crucial for supporting heavy loads without compromising structural integrity. SIPs ability to handle substantial loads makes them an ideal choice for a wide range of building applications.
This strength has been tested repeatedly since SIPs were recognized in the IRC/IBC over 45 years ago. Repeated lab and field engineering tests (linked below*) continue to prove that SIP construction surpasses conventional stick framed wall and truss roof framing in strength.
A standard SIP wall panel can withstand over 2,000 pounds of vertical compression per linear foot before any structural damage occurs.
