Project Overview
The Enchanted Hills Lighthouse Camp for the Blind embarked on an ambitious project to rebuild 25 buildings ranging from 960 SF to 6,700 SF, following devastation from the California wildfires. The project aimed to create a highly efficient, energy-conscious camp environment, incorporating innovative design elements and advanced building technologies.
Design and Sustainability
Premier SIPs were selected for the roof of all buildings due to their high efficiency and ability to meet Title 24 net zero energy requirements. The use of SIPs facilitated a fast and smooth construction process, which was crucial for meeting the stringent fire codes and energy efficiency standards.
End Use
- Building Range: The camp features 25 buildings, varying in size from 960 SF to 6,700 SF.
- Purpose: The camp is designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and efficient environment for blind individuals, enhancing their camp experience.
Why SIPs
The owner and architect chose Premier SIPs for their high efficiency and energy-saving capabilities. The SIP roofs enabled each structure to easily meet Title 24 net zero energy requirements, supporting the camp's sustainability goals.
Benefits of SIPs
- Labor Savings: SIPs saved a tremendous amount of labor as the installer was able to stitch the roof panels together on the ground and lift large portions of the roof into place.
- Speedy Construction: This method enabled a fast dry-in for finish work, allowing for faster occupancy and resumption of camp operations.
- Design Feature: The SIP roofs are a major design feature, highlighting each structure and contributing to the camp's overall aesthetic.
Innovative Design Elements
The use of SIPs in the roof design was a major architectural feature, enhancing both the functionality and visual appeal of the buildings.
Certifications
- Energy Star
- National Green Building Standards
- Local Green Building Programs
- Title 24 Code Compliance for Net Zero
HVAC and Energy Systems
- HVAC: Micro units were used for heating and cooling.
- Solar Panels: Some buildings have solar panels installed, with plans for all buildings to have them in the near future to achieve positive energy consumption.
Client Comments
"This camp was burned out in the CA wildfires in Napa. By utilizing SIPs on the roof, the rebuilt camp was able to achieve the stringent fire codes in the area, gain significant energy efficiency over the burned-down buildings, and enabled the camp to resume operations much faster than anticipated because of the speed of construction SIPs delivered."
Premier SIPs Benefits
- Cost Savings: Premier SIPs are 55% more energy efficient, reducing overall energy costs.
- Speedy Construction: Premier SIPs reduced the construction schedule by 3 to 4 weeks, allowing for faster project completion.
- Reduced HVAC Requirements: SIPs cut HVAC needs by approximately half, resulting in lower energy bills.
- Reduced Waste: The use of SIPs decreased construction material waste, reducing disposal fees and minimizing environmental impact.
Key Features
The Enchanted Hills Lighthouse Camp project showcases the effective use of Premier SIPs in creating a resilient, energy-efficient camp environment. The project underscores significant cost savings, reduced construction time, and enhanced sustainability, demonstrating the practical benefits of using SIPs in rebuilding efforts following natural disasters.
