Project Overview
Mancos Mid Century Modern
Colorado
End Use:
The clients were interested in energy efficiency, durability, etc. After comparing stick built vs SIP it we found SIP to be the more economical & efficiency method and our clients agreed.
Why SIPs?:
Post construction: We all noticed how sound the SIP `s system is. The clients rarely turn on their heating and cooling systems. During construction the dry in time was shockingly fast. We had minimal waste and saved on dumpster costs.
Benefits of SIPs:
The clients were interested in energy efficiency, durability, etc. We all agreed SIPS were a great way to achieve these goals.
Innovative Design Elements or Structural Engineering:
The house included a vaulted clear story, which brings in a ton of natural light and passive solar gain. We used a combination of exposed steel "I" beams and exposed Glue-Lam beams to support the clear story wall and clear roof. Additionally, covered outdoor space was a major feature of the house. Three sides of the house have outdoor space, again with a combination of steel and Glulam beams supporting the patio roofs.
Certifications:
This was not a priority for this project
HVAC:
The HVAC system is a Fujitsu Air Source heat pump providing 3 zones of heating and cooling. There are two outdoor heat pumps, and 3 central ducted air handlers in the crawl space. The house is all electric with no propane or natural gas. Solar was planned for, but not installed during construction.
Energy-Saving Materials Used:
Probably the biggest efficiency factor other than the SIPs and the HVAC system is the window and door package. All units are triple glazed. Some were locally made, with the majority being Kolbe Vistalux and a few Kolbe Forgent. Local units are not tested and certified, but are made to very exacting standards and likely meet or exceed the Kolbe units. The Vistalux units were U-factor .22 and the Forgent units were .25
Energy-Efficient Products Used:
All lighting is LED. Appliance high-energy efficiency.
Solar Panels?:
Panels were not installed but solar was designed into the project. We ran conduit to make future installs easy and we consulted with a local solar installer to make sure we were prepared for future install.
Sustainable Materials Used:
Locally source made components- custom doors, a custom picture window, locally made custom cabinetry throughout the house. Using local products supports our local economy and craftspeople and reduces our carbon footprint. The Cherry cabinets are a combination of FAS domestic cherry and ECO Wood engineered cherry sheet goods.
Rusty steel siding is Bare Skin, from Recla-Metals out of Montrose Colorado, which is a recycled steel product. Wood flooring is renewable, domestically grown maple (not exotic species) All other floors are porcelain tile- We strive to avoid disposable finishes and floors such as laminates and vinyl. These floors will last the life of the home. All paints and most finishes in the house were Low or Zero VOC.
Client Comments:
"The house is awesome. One of the main comments from the clients after living in the home is how comfortable it is - warm in the winter, cool in the summer. No cold spots.-.even around the bigger glazed units. We truly enjoyed working with Premier SIPs. Mark Yerbic was always there to support us. Becky Susan has been a delight and diligent at getting us to record our progress on this project. Thanks again."
